Chinquapin - Norman Camp examines the smooth bark of the largest chinquapin tree on the property of Eleanor and Cris Jones in Carroll County, AR, Oct 6, 2013. This tree along with several other chinquapin trees on the property would be destroyed by clear cutting if SWEPCO either Route 33 or Route 109 is approved. Camp's family has lived here since 1852. As a boy Camp made many meals of chinquapin nuts which he still calls the best nut in the world. This tree and the others around it are what remain from seeds from a giant chinquapin that was killed by chestnut blight in the 1940s. The remains of the huge tree with its rot resistant wood still lies on the ground nearby.
